Last night I attempted to check my Amex card balance on my iPad Mini 2 - only to be told that my version of the Amex app was no longer supported, and I needed to download the most recent Apple IOS version software to continue using it.
Only one problem - my iPad IOS only goes to version 12.5.4 - whereas Apple is now up to 14.? .?
So, effectively, older iPads can no longer access Amex online. :/
As far as I know, no other major bank or financial institution has similarly penalised customers using older iPads - mine works just fine with other bank apps.
Does anybody have "intelligence reports" on this matter ?

It's not a penalty, older versions of operating systems have security holes so it's not surprising that financial institutions, in particular, don't want customers using old operating systems.

The software developers are often forced into not being able to support older OS versions if, for example, they need to use an API to perform some function that just doesn't exist in the older OS versions.

Is that not why Apple update their operating systems ?
A friend of mine has the most recent Apple IOS on her iPad and can access the most recent Amex app no problem.

Old software is replaced due to security risks which Amex evidently judge to be too great to keep supporting. Unfortunately the nature of support is that it doesn't last forever - Apple typically do it for 6 years but on older devices unfortunately they often don't have the spec to run the latest software so it cannot be updated. I suspect other banks will follow. The iPad mini 2 was end of life March 2017, credit to Apple that a product that could be 8 years old is still running but you will need a new one.

Apple only provides updates to a point.  From the sounds of it, it's an iPad Air?  If so it's nearly 8 years old now.  That they've provided support for as long as they have is impressive enough.

Lots of financial institutions have stopped supporting older devices both on IOS and Android and also old versions of apps for security reasons, this is probably the first time you've experienced it and I would be prepared for some of your other banking apps to no longer be supported.

I'm not sure what your expecting with regards to "intelligence reports" or why you would even thing anyone would have anything on this and post it to a public forum?  Even if they did they wouldn't be able to comment on this as it be a breach of security.

I guess your options are to upgrade your devices or if you don't want to do that be prepared to use the web version of online banking and card management.

Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

Just wondered if any other users had an insight - not expecting anybody to compromise The Official Secrets Act !!!
It's an iPad mini 2. one of the best iPad variants - loathed to give it up.
