New for old won't help you much, a new laptop of equivalent spec to an 8 year old one is going to be rubbish. Mechanical hard drive is it?
But there are no new mac laptops with a physical HD... its easy to argue on a new for old that it needs to run the MacOS to be an equivalent

At best you would get the base M1 model which is rubbish and can't be upgraded to make it decent.
Whilst I'm avoiding a 1st gen of a new processor type and would get the 16gb option I'm not sure they are "rubbish"

Plus assuming the OP has a 15" screen then the current model is 16" and all are still intel.
