Claim insurance for a 8 year old macbook and a phone damaged in car accident

It being boxed makes no difference to the insurer, you still have the box.Usman90 said:It will certainly make a difference, I don't think you're a ebay seller or you would not say this. You can have a look into future listings you see on ebay to see the difference it makes with packaging and with the item kept in good condition even if it's old. Appreciate your response 🙂
People tend to think their property is worth far more than it actually is. I seriously doubt you'd be willing to pay even 60% of the list price for an 8-year-old laptop. And neither would anyone else (except the insurer it seems.) At this point it's not a collectable, it's just an outdated (and likely quite slow) tool.
As an example I recently sold a 7-year-old Dell XPS 13 on eBay in basically as new condition (although without a box) and got about 40% of its original price. Like I said I'd bite their hand off at 60%.0 -
If you search 2013 Macbook there are 794 sold results... sure when you filter MBA -v- MBP and if its an i5 or i7 processor etc the numbers will go down but its very rare not to find a reasonable number of cases to get a good idea what prices are.0

Ok thank you for all the comments, I was not expecting to receive answers so fast so I'm definitely impressed with the quick response rate.0

It was mentioned earlier in the thread, but in your position I'd check whether it is covered by my home insurance. If so, most home insurance policies will provide new for old cover.
Even that doesn't mean that you'd get the original purchase price though - it means that you'd get it replaced with a new one of the same model, or the nearest equivalent if the exact model is no longer available. Given how computer technology develops, a model which was expensive and top of the range eight years ago is likely to be equivalent to a somewhat cheaper, mid-range model today.
It would mean making a claim on your home insurance, but you might well find that a single claim on home insurance doesn't affect your future premiums as much as you might expect.
New for old is something that you will only get from your own policy. As mentioned the third party insurer's liabilities are limited to the second hand value of the item. You can argue about exactly what the second hand value is, but you can't get away from the fact that it's not the original purchase price.0 -
But do check any excess on home insurance if claiming .Personally i would not pay more than £50 for a very old macbook , no warranty no idea when any components are going to wear out after eight years usage .1

The excess would be recoverable from the third party insurer in most instances.JJ_Egan said:But do check any excess on home insurance if claiming .Personally i would not pay more than £50 for a very old macbook , no warranty no idea when any components are going to wear out after eight years usage .
As to value? I recently sold my non-working 2008 mac minus its hard drive for £150... macs hold their value much better than non-mac computers; though intentionally sold it before the M1 versions came out as I think they'll drive down the secondhand value of intel based machines.0 -

I doubt the silly money would be more than 50% of the cost of it when bought[DELETED USER] said:Used Macs do go for silly money, it's the Reality Distortion Field...
New for old won't help you much, a new laptop of equivalent spec to an 8 year old one is going to be rubbish. Mechanical hard drive is it?
Shame it's a Mac, the modern ones can't be upgraded. Otherwise you could get the base model and upgrade to a 500gb drive very cheaply."It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

But there are no new mac laptops with a physical HD... its easy to argue on a new for old that it needs to run the MacOS to be an equivalent[DELETED USER] said:
