Now comes something I'm concerned about. My computer is not wifi, she says hers is capable of both cable/wifi. She is bound to ask if she can disconnect my machine so that the cable can be used for hers. The nightmare being that this might create problems for me/my system. I've told her that we will have to go to library etc for hot spots, is this so?

Hi there
The wifi will only work if your internet connection at home has the wireless facility, as you rightly said these can be found at hotspots in cafes, libraries etc;0 -
Yes, i appreciate that, but she thinks she will be able to use the cable from my router to her laptopThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

If you have a router then she will be able to access through her wifi without using the cable0

Buy another cable. They are cheap and then she can just plug it into a spare port on the router.
If she must use your cable, then this will not screw up your laptop at all, that is, when you connect the cable back in your computer. It will mean though that you wont be able to do any internet stuff whilst she is using your cable!
Best to get a second cable: they are called all or one of the following names: ethernet RJ45 cat5e cable. Or use wireless if your router is a wireless router.0 -
Depends on how much it costs. Battery life seems very low. Most modem/routers can take multiple cables (mine has 4 sockets) and as it's wireless there's no problem.0

She will and if your router is a wireless router, she won't need to use an Ethernet cable and will be able to connect to your router using WiFi.
If you had stated which router you have the answers could be more specific. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
As far as I'm aware, my router in not wifi.
My comp is a PC,
I do have spare ports on the router and think I have spare ethernet cables, so we might have lift off.thanks
If this is so, will we be able to use both my PC and her laptop simultainiously?
Will my ISP know or care or say I'm breaking T&C 's?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
"Yes" you'll be able to use the machines simultaneously (though if you're both downloading large items there'll be a performance degradation) and "No" you've no ISP issues in sharing the connection. My eyes! The goggles do nothing!0

And the cost of the laptop?0
