  • Personally i'd avoid 1GB on a Vista machine. This sounds like a supermarket-spec laptop.

For that money, i'd be looking at something like this from Dell:
    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=n1252105&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756

    AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile technology TK-55
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium - English
    2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
    160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
ATI Radeon® Xpress 1270 HyperMemory (integrated)
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including Software
    Dell™ Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini-Card

Get this person who 'knows about computers' to take a look at that spec - yes it may take a few weeks to arrive, but it's a better laptop

Flippin 'eck, yes they needed to make a decision quickly as she is off to a foreign posting in a matter of days and yes, I think it was from Tesco Direct. They knew to avoid comet, dixon & curry's, and although Dell was considered time is/was of the essence. I did give them my independent IT shop where repairs ore done on site, but their site was down or something hence the move to Tesco. So, what now. She only requires it for emailing/photo's and just a bit of general surfing, nothing more.

  • She wants it because it's pink, because of that rational thinking regarding the spec. of the machine has gone out of the window!

So you can both surf the net, buy a cheap hub and a network cable, try ebuyer.

  • Hey, don't knock wanting a pink laptop :)

As I read it, the OP's daughter is off to the Falklands and wants to take the laptop with her and so has ordered it now from Tesco Direct and to be fair to her and the OP for what she wants to use the laptop its a fair spec, no?
  • For a laptop mouse in Pink, you can look here but its out of stock at the moment :(

I can't wait to ask why and if pink featured in the decision. The only thing that comes to mind is that if it were to be stolen, not many guys would want it (lol).

I'd rather not give any info away on-line, but the advice given to her was from someone "at work". Equally I can't say anything about "his" knowledge about such things, other than he has a number of PC (almost double numbers) at home, which re in constant use, so I feel personally that she may feel his judgement was something she should take into consideration.

As I've said elsewhere, all she wants it for is to be able to communicate with us (and others) whilst away.

So she does not need a warranty then? Is the power the same as the uk or can the psu handle the difference? I'd buy the Pc in the other country if poss, or get one whos warranty was supported outside the uk too - think tosh once did this.

In my eyes £450 is a lot of cash to spend and have no comeback on a new product that may go faulty - to me the name Medion always was synonymous with cheapness i.e. Aldi and poor customer service.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
