Maybe it's not worth spending 4 years of your life to buy a little cramped impractical box. The only 'good' thing is it will accelerate a little bit faster which on today's crowded roads is useless anyway.

    Who said it was?

Who, other than you, suggested that people on an average wage could, should or do save all their wages (and somehow dont pay tax either), to then buy a £120K car?

    Dont be daft.

Not everyone can afford expensive things.  Thats life.

Its only you who seems to have an issue with that.  Yet you tell us how happy you are in early retirement.  The two seem at odds.

I think I have seen YouTube videos of stuff like this. You have someone with one of these cars in central London. They rev the cars filling the air with smoke and making a racket. Everyone thinks "what an idiot". They say "you are jealous. Look at me". Everyone thinks "what an idiot". The petrol head really can't get it that other people just aren't interested.

Some people obviously are as all they talked about for the past few days is someone they used to work with years ago having an expensive car that the individual doing the talking can't afford.

Maybe you should go rent one for a day or go on a driving experience and see how you feel then. Because you seem to be missing the point by miles.

I think the only people thinking "what an idiot" on here are people reading your posts.

Any others i know just dont care what the non petrolhead thinks.

Mind you, I'm sure your two ex work colleagues from all those years ago would find it hilarious to know their choice of car has got to you so much that you're still festering on it years later.  AND that you went checking up on them.

The average take home pay for a full time worker is £30k. So if they save up all their earnings for 4 years they could buy an R8. The 2 work colleagues who spent a lot on cars I did a bit more research on yesterday. They are both still working age 77.
You're comparing apples with oranges.  In what way is the R8 an 'average' car?  There are lease deals for around £1700 a month, so if that person is living with very accommodating parents they could get one on their salary, though they would be tight for filling it up, and insuring it.  Now try the same workings out with someone on 75k or above.  More affordable, but I still think with other expenses would be tight.  This is not a car for those on average earnings, and the car does not fail because it is too expensive for those on average or above average earnings.  A good quality used one will be more affordable for some - there is a 2020 model Spyder for 110k with 5k on the clock (the base model new is now £126k on carwow).

It's not a car for everyone. Financially or comfort.  Stop judging it like it is.

OK - so are used car prices generated by Dealers simply plucking a figure from the air?

A couple of weeks ago we saw a used car at £17k but couldn't take action
Then overnight Monday - Tuesday it became £18k
    Then it moved to £17.5k
    Today it changed to £18.3k

    What is that all about?

If the car didn't sell at £17k, why will it sell at £18.3k?

Some people think dearer is better.

A few years ago a neighbour was selling a litter of pups- 4 were show quality and 2 were not.  Nothing wrong with them exceot they did not have show potential.

The show quality ones were priced higher than the other 2.
People were buying the higher priced ones although they only wanted a pet, not a show dog.

My neighbour raised the price of the other 2 to the same  as the others and they sold straight way.

Buyers didn't want the 'cheap ones'.
