Number obtained without knowledge

Options
Had text saying owe money and previous correspondence ignored. Link and phone number in text.  Did not click link but googled and took me to a solicitors website.  Not had any correspondence and not dealing with any firm of solicitors.  Just curious how, if genuine, they obtained my number

Anyone can get your number from lots of places. Especially if they pay.

This is how scammers are operating. If you still have the text, does your phone have the facility to report it as a scam? On mine I can report as scam and then block. Which is what I advise you to do. I doubt that it's genuine. Even if the firm of solicitors is genuine, it doesn't mean that they are the ones who sent you a message. Somebody wants your money and they need reporting.

They perhaps just guessed at a million random numbers starting with 07 and hoped one of the recipients would bite?
  • A letter now arrived from supposedly Solicitors that came up when googled the link.  Looks like they deal with private parking fines but don’t give details where and as I don’t actually use car in question am totally bemused

  • I do know car but as said I don’t use it.  More concerned how they got my number and spoke to an ex policeman who is totally bemused as well

Pretty easy really, all those places that say "Tick here to not receive marketing guff" or "We will share your data with interested third parties.  Untick if you don't want us to do this" will be flogging your details to basically anyone who wants them.

What is the name of the solicitors firm?

It would be a stretch to get from a phone number to a registration number by random guessing. Are you sure that this is not in relation to a parking ticket paid by your phone?
  • The link in text, I didn’t click on link, someone checked it out and  Gladstone’s came up. You
