Fedex import charges Japan to UK

Hi all can anyone please inform me that my fedex charges are correct please?
I am being charged import tax/duty on an instrument I bought £300 online from japan. Since Japan and UK have reached a free trade deal does this impact upon import charges at all?
No VAT being charged on the invoice either.

Depends on exactly what you have bought, how much you paid for it including shipping and insurance, when it was sent etc

Free trade is about duty and is rarely covering 100% of goods but it doesn't cover VAT so immediately you'll have at least 20% VAT and a handling fee to pay... this would be paid on top of the duty if any applies (ie £20 duty adds another £4 VAT)

FedEx submitted the information given to them by the shipper and HMRC told FedEx how much was due. FedEx pay that and then claim it back from you with a handling fee for the pre-clearance service they complete on your behalf as the addressed recipient.

So you would need to pay FedEx and then ask HMRC why they charged (if you feel they shouldn't have) and can you reclaim (there is a process for this on gov.uk).

Starting from the top, depending on what kind of instrument, what it is made of etc. then there may or may not be duty on it regardless of the free trade deal. As the goods are £300 the base level would be 2.5% but it depends on the specifics.

You will then need to pay VAT on the value of the goods, shipping, insurance and duty at the rate of 20%.
Finally there will be a brokerage fee, probably £10-30, which is charged on top.
