Cat tracker

Hi! We have a kitten who will be spayed and microchipped at the end of august.  We want to let her outside when this is done, because she’s always trying to escape out the door and likes to sit on the window sill, trying to get out that way!

she is my 14yr old daughters kitten.  We had a scare when we thought she’d escaped and my daughter was so so upset, I’ve never seen her that upset!  Kitten was fast asleep under the bed even though we’d looked there!

so I want to get her a gps tracker for peace of mind.  It needs to be lightweight (because she’s small) but accurate.  It would be a bonus to have an app on my iPhone.

any recommendations? Thanks!

There was a recent thread with a couple of suggestions - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6281338/seeing-where-my-cat-has-been

I haven't used one personally. Any GPS tracker will only be accurate to about 5 meters - that's all that's possible at the moment.

Since you're an Apple user, have you considered AirTags?  They use findmy and register a ping when near to an apple mobile device, which broadcasts the location.   So might work in a populated area, but not in the middle of nowhere.

I have only seen trackers which ar e attached to a fixed collar.

A fixed collar on a cat are  not recommended  as it is  liable to get caught when it goes through undergrowth etc.  and can lead to strangulation.  I don't know if you and get one on a collar that can stretch when caught so the cat can wriggle free.

How old is the kitten? Ideally a cat should not go out until about a year old. Much as the kitten may want to go out it's not necessarily safe as she will still be quite young.

I use Pawtrack on my roaming cat but it only goes down to a certain size so may be too big for a kitten depending on size and age. I find Pawtrack very accurate. As an example, yesterday my cat was showing as right at the fence between our garden and our neighbours - and sure enough, he was snuggled up to the fence in our flowerbed! It's also about as small and light as any GPS tracker I've seen. So if you do want to go down that route I'd recommend Pawtrack.

Edit to add - @sheramber, Pawtrack is a safety collar so will release under pressure as with other safety collars.

Not much good to track your cat if it has become detached.

Our cat has managed to loose 2 in some location where they are invisible - gets expensive..

One of our cats had a habit of losing it's collar one day and bringing it home in it's mouth the next.  I gave up after a while.  But that was just a collar not a tracker.

Truthfully I think until they come out with the tracker chip they aren't really worth the fuss.  (as much as I would love to know where the silly beasts are)
