You can see/hear the hdd access tracks on boot up?

tried that blue button + button with the blue writing on it displaying the screen or lines? - look at the manufacturers site and you will probably see it there in the manual.

The next is to turn it off, unplug the mains, remove the battery, carefully unplug the memory, then plug the memory back in again and reassemble

Hi Bookduck - sorry but I really wouldnt dare to tamper with the memory - tonight is the first time I have removed the battery. I cant find a blue button either so I think this is all a bit above my head :o thanks for your advice.

  • when you removed the battery, did you have the power adapter plugged in?

If so, try again without it, or alternatively, hold the power on button down for 6 secs
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Another idea is to try to reboot with an xp disc if you have one and repair from there.
If no disk you could borrow one and it will work just as well.

I think I do have a xp disc but this is looking petty bad so I think I will have to get somebody to look at it as I am well out of my debth here.

LOL love your avatar. I am aware of the problems with the battery on Dells as mine is one of the ones that is affected - it only happens every now and then though so up to now I have managed. Dell told me it needed a new motherboard

edited to add that the battery is the original and it does sometimes not charge but if I leave it for a while it starts charging again - I know it will probably go eventually but so far it is just about clinging on

It was un plugged when I took the battery off. The only way that I can switch it off is to hold the on/off switch down till it goes off.

What happens, which lights come on, which lights stay on, which lights flicker

right took battery out and plugged in power supply, held button down for 6 seconds and it switched on and stayed switched on ( fan always comes on when I boot up ) The light on the front of the computer ( I think it is the on/off light ) stays on and the second light with a picture which looks like a can is also on. The light on the top of the computer is on ( the one that looks like a little brief case with the number 9 in it ). After a while the light on top of the computer goes out and the one on the front which has a picture of a can starts to flicker. At all times the fan is going on and off.
