  • £125 on a kettle? Are you nuts??!
    Is anyone sane ?

I don't think that it's too expensive for a kettle my current POS cost me £60 and its constantly leaking. If i went for that one Id be well under budget in my kitchen and I would be able to save a couple of hundred for the bathroom to be done or the wallpaper I want for my living room.

In cost per use terms, £125 for a kettle isn't too horrific, and if you have the money and it brings you joy, then why not?

A couple of months ago I wanted to get a desk lamp - I could have bought something suitable for £20, but I bought an Anglepoise type 75 for £175 - I love it, it brings me joy when I look at it, and I've zero regrets.

    Exactly!

Our - electric - Alessi kettle cost around £165, but it's now 16 years old and every day it brings a bit of joy to my life, even if I'm not using it 😍 I consider that a bargain!

As Doozer says, these are design classics that - imho, anyway - improve the quality of my life. Same as my ridiculously expensive articulated hornbeam ivy tap and dualit toaster, lol!

In my world, I'd rather have a design classic - even if I have to scour eBay for a vintage version - than buy a cheaper, poorly constructed/designed alternative that won't stand the test of time 😉

    No regrets here, either.....
Are we the same person?  I have a Dualit too and got ridiculously excited about owning it 😂   It's 5 years old now.

Mine was £30 £25 on offer at Sainsburys. It looks fine and works well with multiple daily use after 6 years, and I do expect it to give me another 6 at least. I really don't believe spending any more will bring me joy for more than 2 minutes, but a hot tap will buy me some convenience for the foreseeable.

Some of my favourite pieces at home (lamps, etc) are Gumtree bargains.

    Ha! Possibly, lol 🤣

Our first dualit was purchased second hand on eBay. When I decided I'd prefer a copper one (the first was cream) we passed it on to a grateful family member! The copper one - bought last year - was heavily reduced in the sales 😉

Rosa, as per above, we also like seeking out treasures online - I'm known to family and friends as 'the eBay queen' lol! - I'd say 75% of the things in our home, including furniture, were eBay finds 😎

I still love a bargain.  I found our
kitchen in the Black Country for half the price it was initially quoted from the posh London shop.  The tiles are all from the Fired Earth outlet, our flooring cost £3,000 less than I'd been quoted.  Our bath and sinks are ex-display, as is our sofa and bed, all half price. Our mattress (Loaf) was £39 at auction 😁 - about 95% off!

The Ikea wardrobes and cabinetry were all full price but even that was done to save money.  It's Ikea-hacked instead of building bespoke.

And building our own house was definitely cheaper than buying one.   Trade discounts help, as does 0% VAT on most things.  💃

I need to update my instagram account but can't be bothered to tidy up properly!

I'll put the dressing room on my thread about the house and get a photo of the lounge units later.

  • Well we went and had another look at the house that we are buying, The kitchen is goosed.....

So the job that I was going to leave for a few months and just scrub and bleach the existing units till the rest was done unfortunately is needing doing as a priority :(

Rather gutted that I am having to buy a kitchen now out of necessity rather that my kitchen that I want !

How bad is it? Does it honestly need replacing wholesale, or could you get away with some more minor repairs e.g. replacing the sink or oven until you're ready to rip it out?

We lived with a not built in, built in fridge for 5 years as we didn't redo the kitchen as quickly as we were planning - it worked fine then, and works fine now it's in a cabinet.

I can understand that - any money spent feels like too much f its not your dream kitchen. As @Emmia asks, can you live with it? Its surprising what you can get used to after a while. I have been living like Stig of the Dump for weeks now...
