Rewards and cashback cards are definitely worth looking at. It's free money which you otherwise wouldn't get by spending via debit card so it's a no-brainer for me. Making £300 a year from cashback sounds impressive, but it can quite easily be done through some of the deals available through Amex.

I don't get these 'reward' card/s incentives, just looks like it encourages people to spend more? What would be the actual reward on a cup of overpriced coffee anyway, 2p?
Though I'm sure some people do get enticed into spending more because they're getting cashback, the trick is to only use the ones where you'd spend money anyway (or to try a different shop/restaurant for that purchase).

The cashback all adds up - general cashback on the card (e.g. 0.5% on all purchases) plus the retailer reward (e.g. 5% with a retailer) plus going through a site such as Quidco to get further cashback.

I must admit £306.20 is impressive and not to be dismissed lightly but there must be a sizeable spend to turn 80p's & 50p's into over £300.

I could get the Natwest reward card which I 'think' gives 1% on supermarket shop and 0.25% on everything else although I worked out the 'reward' element would be about £10-£15 a year on my spend not, doesn't feel worth it to me.

Maybe I'll take a more in depth look at these reward cards when I can be bothered.
Thing is, the £300 includes bonus offers, introductory cashback rates (5% with AMEX), refer a friend etc. etc. There's quite a bit to earn back in your first year if you are on the ball and check this site often. I'm not expecting the same amount next year but still enough to make it worthwhile.
  • I've got a barclaycard cashback card - got my years cashback just at £26 - not a massive amount, but it's £26 off my normal spending with no effort required, so why not?

As far as I can tell, you can't see which retailers will give you rewards without registering. Even then, the rewards offered are going to be personalised, so it's quite impossible to find out what benefit this could have to you as an individual. Furthermore, to get the personalised offers you need to be registered to receive marketing emails (or keep logging in to the web site), so it seems to me it's an excuse for them to advertise to more individuals.

Some years ago Nationwide introduced a similar scheme. Thinking I had nothing to lose, I registered. I then received far more trash marketing than I could cope with, but never anything that interested me. After a while I deregistered.

So I shall not bother with this scheme. Others may think differently, which is fine - we have the choice.

Hope you don't mind me asking this on here. Has the previous Barclaycard cashback changed? I have a Platinum card and until abput 10 mths ago used to get a decent amount of cashback each month with spending on supermarket and fuel but then did a balance transfer on to it so not used it for ages. I was going to pay the balance off early and then start using it for cash back again-can anyone confirm if they still do cashback on this or do you have to join the new scheme..been on hold to Barclays card for ages twice now after getting cut off!
  • Yes, the normal cashback still applies, the new cashback rewards is in addition to it, so if you start using your card for purchases again you will get the cashback. The new scheme is voluntary so up to you if you want to sign up to that one too.

My Platinum Barclaycard has never had Cashback on it, and I've had it for about ten years, so yours must be an old product which has long been discontinued.

I recommend you ring them and ask if the Cashback still applies on your card.  If it doesn't, you could change to the Rewards Barclaycard which does pay Cashback.

I have a Barclays Freedom Reward card. Can I add this to the card too? Not being greedy or anything ;-)
