I've received this email today:

New Barclaycard Cashback Rewards

We’ve introduced a new benefit to your Barclaycard Visa credit card. You can now earn up to 15% cashback when you shop at a range of participating retailers.

To turn it on, simply register your card for free and you’re all set to start earning. T&Cs apply.

Once you turn on Barclaycard Cashback Rewards, you’ll automatically earn cashback when you pay at participating retailers – a new benefit of being a Barclaycard Visa customer. Plus, there’ll be regular updates to keep you posted on all the latest offers.

With Barclaycard Cashback Rewards, you decide how you use your cashback. You can redeem it back to your Barclaycard, trade up for an e-gift card or donate it to a charity.

N.B. This is nothing to do with the Rewards Barclaycard, as I just have the bog standard Platinum Barclaycard.  This is a new Cashback Rewards scheme which can be added to any Barclaycard, including the Rewards Barclaycard.

How useful this new scheme will be depends on which retailers you can claim the Cashback Rewards with. It's probably similar to the scheme offered by Lloyds and Halifax at the moment.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Seems to just be a rebranded version of the standard Visa reward portal which Ulster Bank use and Nationwide/HSBC also used to use. Same sort of miserly offers too unfortunately. Will keep an eye on the emails but I don't have great hopes.

I definitely agree with that. It might improve in the future, hopefully.

  • I don't get these 'reward' card/s incentives, just looks like it encourages people to spend more? What would be the actual reward on a cup of overpriced coffee anyway, 2p?

Cashback cards are great! I don't spend anything on a card unless i'm getting some kind of reward.

Just this week I earned £8 back at Byron burger with this particular reward scheme. Sure, it seems like peanuts but it's £8 in my pocket. We were going there anyway and it's just a case of picking the right card for the job. Get 1% back with AMEX or get 10% off with Barclaycard.

I'm coming up to my AMEX annual reward which currently stands at £306.20. I use that for pretty much all my day-to-day purchases. 80p here, 50p there...it all adds up to something decent over the 12 months.

I must admit £306.20 is impressive and not to be dismissed lightly but there must be a sizeable spend to turn 80p's & 50p's into over £300.

I could get the Natwest reward card which I 'think' gives 1% on supermarket shop and 0.25% on everything else although I worked out the 'reward' element would be about £10-£15 a year on my spend not, doesn't feel worth it to me.

Maybe I'll take a more in depth look at these reward cards when I can be bothered.
