Lease or buy a second hand car

Khan solves that by his idea that everywhere inside M25 gets allocated to a London Borough.AdrianC said:ItIt is already being suggested by Khan that the ULEZ goes out to the M25
The Mayor of London only controls London. Not everywhere inside the M25 is London.
Not something I think is near, but the roll-out of the revenue-generating ULEZ criteria is too attractive to politicians.0 -

You need to buy two vehicles, but have not said how much mileage you do, total annual mileage (though I suspect it will not be that extortionate given living in London unless you have a long commute).tel10 said:Hello. We live in London and need to get 2 vehicles that are ULEZ compliant. We are trying to figure out whether to buy 2nd hand ones (hybrid/electric) or to lease both and what is better value long term.
Thanks
How big do the cars need to be?
What budget do you have?
How long do you intend to keep a car for?
With that information, you can start to make choices.
If you buy, and get petrol, some quite old cars qualify as ULEZ compliant - my 2007 Focus is - and can be purchased for relatively low amounts.
There are some good lease deals still available - there was one thread recently for a car at less than £173 all-in even considering the upfront payment and with low excess mileage rates.
Budget about £17000 each - if we were buying We'd want them to be somewhat future proof hence wanting hybrid/electric cars as we can only imagine the restrictions will only get tougher on petrol cars in the next 5 years and if we bought we'd want to keep them for 8-10 years and get good use out of them.
One an SUV, the other no smaller than an Astra. We have 2 sons and a dog. My husband uses his for work which will be in and out of ULEZ daily and I use the family car for the kids and shopping etc.
Thanks for the good questions.0 -
Got a good budget for something like a Renault Zoe 41kWh, Nissan Leaf 40kWh, Hyundai Ioniq or at a bit higher the MG ZS EV if you want to go EV.tel10 said:

I personally opted for a (battery owned) 41 kWh Renault Zoe and it's entirely possible to get a 2019 model which will have a couple of years warranty on the car, and 6yrs on the battery. The car warranty can be extended for a fairly modest £359/year until the car is 10-years old, so you could run the entire car for around 6yrs completely under warranty.
I plan on doing this and I am two years into a used 2-yr old model I bought. Compared to leasing deals over 2yrs, the cost has been around £150/month cheaper by buying used (looking at what trade-in prices for the car would have got me).1 -
It doesn't work like that...Grumpy_chap said:

With those budgets and use-profiles, the option is to go full-electric for both vehicles now.tel10 said:Both between 5-6000 miles/yr

For the husband's commute, a Nissan Leaf.
For the family car, MG ZS EV.
You should be able to get both within the combined budget and the range on the family car will be plenty - there may be a handful of times a year that you charge away from home.
If you have range anxiety on the family car (though there would be no need to), then consider a Hyundai Tucson. Good option fully petrol, or flex that budget up and the Leaf budget down and the pair can still be had with the Leaf full EV and the Tucson hybrid.0 -
Exactly. He doesn't have power over other councils and can't just take part of their area and incorporate it into Greater London. I'm in one of these boroughs which is within M25, but not in Greater London.AdrianC said:

Khan has stated his view that the Mayor of London boundary should be expanded to match the M25 boundary so the locations within the M25 but outwith GLA would become GLA.
For example, most of Spelthorne would move from Surrey to London.0
