Buying a New Build - Upgrades/Extras

  • s. We asked if they could install a personnel door in our garage but they said it was something they didn't offer as an option, so we are looking to do that at some point now we are in.
if the door is from the house into the garage then it can be quite a big deal and can see why the developers weren't interested - probably the old building regs etc
Ah, should have made this clearer - the personnel door would be from the garage into the garden (garage is not connected to the house).

These upgrades tend to be for things like flooring, integrated appliances, turfing, additional sockets, tiling the whole height around the bath etc. and the prices can be extortionate!

I saw a fair amount of new builds when I was looking for a house and I was shocked when quite a few sellers told me that shower fixtures over a bath tub were EXTRAS. If you don't pay for them as extras...they just put a bath tub with taps.

So many new builds like this, they are 2-3 years old, bathrooms still looking good and shiny and yet you'd have to rip them apart just to have a shower. Borderline disgusting.
Our new build doesn't have a shower over the bath in the main bathroom. But we have a huge shower cubicle in the en suite so we really don't need another shower over the bath.
So in the event you have guests staying overnight you let them shower in your en suite?

    Very cool.

People can be really dramatic on this forum.
It's not that. I think in my case it's the fact that not being from the UK I am not yet used to the houses here built with much lower standards compared to houses in my home country or in any other country in the EU that I have been to.

So many things that I consider basics and even just a matter of common sense, here are seen as extras or not necessary. Just a matter of standards, as I said. Oh well.

Well yeah duh! They could always have a bath or you could you know install a shower and bath tap unit for £200/300? Every house is usually built with a bath in the bathroom and a shower in the en-suite, people tend to add a shower to the bathroom for convenience.

I will probably regret saying this, but it’s years since I last had a bath! :)
I always love the idea of a relaxing bath, with candles and chilled glass of white, but rarely get round to it.

We had one when we moved into the new build just to check it was all working as it should. Have not used it since.
Ditto, shortly after moving to our new (to us, not newbuild) in February. However, it made me realise just how creaky my old bones are when I struggled to get out. No wine had been consumed! Found myself planning where to put the grab rail but decided I don't want the bathroom to look like an old folks home (even though we're both in our 70s  :o

Big nice bath tubs look good on instagram, especially the free standing ones. I bet it's one of the main reasons people get bath tubs in the first place, to show them off.

I only used the bath tub once in the last 20 years and only after I ran my first half marathon and had to soak my cramping legs in hot water with salts.

On the other hand, my partner takes a long bath every week. Glass of wine, netflix, and in she goes for a good hour :D
