What was your first credit card limit and what is it now?

Afternoon,

Just want to hear about others experiences with credit cards, I’ve had a bad history before but now on the right track…

What was your first credit card limit and what card was it?

What was your first increase and how long did it take?

How do you use that credit card, I.e, spending habits?

Good grief! It was in 1977 that I got my first credit card - a Barclaycard, 'cos I switched my bank account to Barclays and Barclaycards doubled as cheque guarantee cards. I really can't remember what credit limit I had then, or when I got my first increase. I got a second credit card (Midland Access) in about 1980, and used both for many years. All I can say about my credit limit is that it's always been more than sufficient for my needs. That's all that matters.

These days, I use credit cards for almost all of my spending - food, entertainment, car maintenance and fuel, clothing, gifts, holidays, whatever. They're paid off in full every month by DD. Statements are produced on the 19th or 20th, a few days before I get paid (at the end of the calendar month). DDs collect a few days after I'm paid (usually around the 15th of the following month or the 3rd for AmEx). This means that when I get paid, I know exactly how much I need to retain in my current account to pay off the credit cards when the DDs collect. In other words, I use the credit cards as a tool to make my money management easier.

Capital One Platinum cashback card. I opened in 2014 and still have it. Started with a £1000 limit.

What was your first increase and how long did it take?

After about 6 months they offered me a £250 increase.

The credit card is a cashback card (paying 0.5%). I use it for day to day spending and pay off in full every month. After I'd had the card for about 18 months, I applied for an Amex cashback card which I now use as my main card. Amex offered a much higher limit initially (£7500) and I also pay it off in full every month.

First card - Access (remember those? "Access, your flexible friend"). Credit limit £250. I was 18, at college. First increase, someone left their finger in the zero button too long as it went up to £4000!

Nowadays I have Amex and Barclaycard, total credit limit £30k. I have never spent anywhere near that amount! Use them for all purchases but pay it all off each month.

Yes,  I remember that one.    I saw a film  long ago about Viking raiders and many of them carried access.   No doubt useful on their weekend chopping expeditions.

It was 1986 and I was a student, just turned 18. I got an Access card from Midland Bank, and my limit was £250. I remember it going up to £550 abut nine months later

Now, my highest limit is £22500 on Barclaycard.

It was a long time ago, I think about £500 (ish)

I think it went to £750 about 12 months later.

As it generates cashback I use a credit card for everything I possibly can.

As for now, my highest card is AmEx who recently doubled my limit to £20,000.
    The others I have range from £3500 - £11,100

All way more than I need.

My first was an capital one in 2005 with a £250 limit, now my Barclaycard is £25k and not sure on my Amex, it’s a charge card, I’ve put through some big purchases all over the world and they’ve never been declined 🤓 everything is paid off each month!

    Capital One when I turned 18 - £200 increased to £1200 4 months after

Rarely using it now as using a Barclaycard Rewards.

Sainsbury's in 2017. Already in my 40s, I hadn't known I 'needed' a credit card until I started reading this forum. Think it was for £1500. MSE Credit Club said I had a 60% of getting it.

What was your first increase and how long did it take?

I don't remember, think it went up to £2000 after a year. It's now £4500. I have bigger limits on other cards. Maybe I'll reduce it, I don't need that much a month for groceries.

How do you use that credit card, I.e, spending habits?

Sainsbury's online shopping only. Paid in full every month.
