Barclay rewards credit card

In short - as an existing Barclaycard holder you can't have one.
Having failed to upgrade my Barclaycard through the App - told the card was frozen and I was not able to access Live Chat for reasons no one could tell me, I rang and spent three hours being passed from person to person, getting cut off, told to use the App and eventually that someone from live chat would contact me by the end of the day.  They did - set me a "no reply" text saying use the App!  By 8pm there was an online "server" error" on all Barclay log ins. So today, feeling slightly calmer, I tried the App again with the same result. So I rang again this afternoon and spoke to an extremely helpful customer service guy who spend over half an hour trying to find out why I couldn't get a Barclay reward card eventually being told that there was "no offer" on my existing cards and if I cancelled them I would have to wait six months to apply for another one!  He then chased up the "live chat" issue and, true to his word, rang me back after another fifteen minutes to say that the "live chat" was down.
I have been a loyal Barclay's customer for 50 years but I am seriously looking to change (if it wasn't such an upheaval).  I will certainly remove the App from my phone and use a Halifax Clarity card instead.

I’m failing to see what the question is here or are you simply ranting?

Many users on this forum have been able to upgrade their Barclaycard to the Rewards one, I myself did it last year with my old platinum Barclaycard, I had to do it by calling them as the upgrade via the app wasn’t available at the time.

You may be a loyal Barclays customer, however Barclaycard are a separate entity from Barclays Bank and your loyalty won’t mean anything to Barclaycard.

Do you use your Barclaycard often or only occasionally? You could try raising a complaint with Barclaycard about what’s happened and see if they will investigate and give you a more definite reason for not being able to upgrade to the Rewards one.

Why is your card frozen? This could also be a reason why it can’t be upgraded.

Thanks you for your comments but my post was after many conversations on the subject which culminated with the lovely helpful customer service person,Scott, being told (by his using live chat)  that I could not upgrade my cards "as there was no promotional offer on those cards".  I have held a Barclaycard with no overspends or problems and used frequently for certainly more than 20years and I opened another platinum one about five years ago for Travel when they were offering interest free cash withdrawals from overseas ATMs which seemed  not to be the case now.  However I have just read that since mine was acquired before 2019 it probably still qualifies.  I have not travelled for two years so that card has not been used but Scott was told the card had not been frozen but I couldn't cancel it and get a rewards card without waiting six months before applying.  All this info he could only get by using their internal "live chat" and he has logged a complaint on my behalf.

So I still don't know why I can't upgrade to a Rewards card. I had surmised that it was issued to attract new customers.
  • I too wanted to change my Barclaycard Platinum to a Barclaycard Rewards and, after seeing on this forum that you could upgrade through the app, I followed the directions and was able to accomplish such a move inside minutes, albeit await until next statement date for it to take effect.

Sorry that you have not experienced the same smooth process in your attempts to achieve the same goal.

I am not a 'new' customer though, so your surmisation may not be correct, in this instance.

I would likely feel the same frustrations as you though, had I experienced the same circumstances as you.

As much as you have been a customer for many, many years, nobody is entitled to a particular product just because they're a longstanding customer. Although generally a long relationship does put you in good stead for another product, it's not always the case.

You mention 'no overspends or problems' - how about balances versus limits? Did you regularly carry a balance that bore interest? Were you ever near the limit? Was there a period when you only made minimum payments? There may be other patterns of behaviour that while not 'breaking any terms and conditions' might be seen as a little more risky in the present climate, and as such they've declined your request to transfer.

I too changed my Barclaycard forward just under a year ago, I sent a 'secure message' through the browser asking if I qualified - they replied with yes, but I had to call them to process it. The whole procedure was straightforward enough. You might need to wait a few months and try again.

I am glad others have been successful and, if I can raise the energy, I might try again but I have had NONE of the above patterns of behaviour.  I have never paid interest, in fact I don't think I've ever come within a thousand pounds of my limit and always paid by direct debit so my history is impeccable.   I am over 70 and tried to keep abreast of technology but the frustrations of the app and telephone complaint system wastes so much time.

PS.  My husband pointed out that it maybe because the card I wanted to upgrade was issued before 2019 - are those of you successful people upgrading a post 2019 card?

Before 24th June?  After that the conditions changed so no interest cash withdrawals were no longer offered.

Which terms and conditions are you referring too?  The rewards one always had 0% on cash withdrawals abroad and still does at first it was for a limited time, but they dropped that and made it a permanent feature of the Rewards Card.

As for this strange 2019 date you keep mentioning (where have you got this from?) I don’t think that’s really anything to do with it. I’d had mine for nearly 15 years before I decided to message Barclaycard via the website to see if I could switch to the rewards one and a few hours later I got the reply to say I could but I would need to call up to change it so I did.

I’m guessing that you just don’t fit the customer profile they want for users of there reward card, hence why you don’t have the option of upgrading to it.

Does the Reward card have a minimum yearly spend before cashback is paid, like Amex.
Or is it paid out for any amount of spending?
