I have just been up to the town and I called into the PC shop which I used many times and told the owner about the problem and he said it is probably the drivers and I should install them again.I still have the disc which came with it but it say'Windows 2000,Xp Professional,Window's Vista, not Window's 10 can I still use it.Do I just need to update it if so how do I do that.

Did you see my previous reply?

Simplest way to reinstall is to uninstall the printer (all variants) and select to uninstall the drivers. Then choose to Add a new printer and follow guidance for adding it by IP address. (Your printer may have something on it to tell you the IP address; or look at the printer details in Windows before you uninstall it). Windows will try to find the relevant drivers on install. OR you can download them here: https://www.brother.co.uk/support/dcpj315w/downloads

Stop faffing around with disks. Go to the website:

Pick your version of Windows (presumably Windows 10) and you will get a "Full Driver & Software Package (Recommended)" link.  Download that, turn the printer off, run what you've downloaded, follow the instructions and hopefully Bob will be your uncle.

I have had this problem solved my son and his wife called in yesterday first time in months and as he builds and repairs Laptops,Desktops and even ipads I told him about my problem he said he would take a look and not sure what he did it but now it works. We hardly ever see them so the visit came in handy .So thank's for all the replies on here but I am sure I will be here again.

Maybe it would have been prudent to have your son install Teamviewer or similar, so if the printer goes offline again he can fix it again without a need to physically pop in.

I suspect one of three things has happened:  1) Open print queue -> printer -> untick work offline, or 2) uninstall and reinstall printer.  3) printer lost connection to wifi.  Reconnected.

If he knows what he is doing he would have set the printer to use a static ip address perhaps
