What Happens When You Stop Disabled Benefits?

My friend is on the highest rate of disability benefits and has a Motability car. What happens if they decide to end their benefits claim? Do they just phone up or write to stop their claim? Are there any processes and forms to fill? And is it true that they will be given a grant to go towards purchasing a car?

If the claimant wishes to end their claim they would need to contact DWP and inform them that that is what they wish to do.

The Motability Scheme transitional support package is available to people who have their benefit stopped following a DWP reassessment.

It would therefore appear not apply to someone who gives up the claim.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Do you have any idea why your friend wishes to end the claim, assuming they still qualify?

People claim PIP/DLA as well as work. Providing the work you do doesn't contradict the reasons why you're claiming the disability benefits there shouldn't be any problems.

PIP is not an out of work benefit.

It is paid to compensate the additional costs incurred through disability. E.g Motoability car / Taxi fares to work, etc.

I would strongly advise your friend to get accredited benefit advice before ending their claim.

Thanks, what does 'accredited benefit advice' mean exactly?

It means getting benefit advice from somebody who knows what they are talking about rather than just the bloke down the pub.
Somewhere like the Citizens Advice Bureau

It's actually ESA that would be stopped. What happens when you contact the DWP and tell them that you want ESA stopped? I mean, do they just stop it there and then? Or do you have to fill a form in? Do they need detailed reasons for stopping, such as a formal job offer letter?

Why do they want to stop the ESA? are they working more than 16 hours per week? Do they claim Income Related ESA and have savings/capital of more than £16,000? Has their condition improved?

Did they get expert advice as previously advised by Alice?
