A thought experiment in the spirit of this thread:

If you had a maximum budget of £125,000 to buy a house outright anywhere in the UK, where would you go, and why?
As for me, I value liveliness, amenities, community, and access to"proper" greenery/nature, so somewhere like Glasgow or Newcastle would potentially suit!

in the whole of Sussex this money would get you a caravan4

Littleborough, Lancashire. It is a small village on the edge of open countryside and there is a train station with a commuter line to Manchester.

For £125k probably South Yorkshire area...some beautiful homes in that region2

I would go to somewhere around Swansea, you aren't far from the beach, city and some very nice countryside. Cardiff is about 45 minutes on the motorway and you can quite easily get into England (if you want to).1

Where I did buy last year and pocket the spare £45ish grand.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0

For £125k I would probably stay in Worksop.
Could buy a nice house for that here. Probably not a forever home but something to bridge a gap comfortably.

A long way from the big centres of population where a fund like that will still get you something a human being deserves as basic shelter. I don't mean far out in the wilds where you'll need a 4x4, or tourist areas like Cornwall, where £125k wouldn't get you anything half decent and make you feel even more like a pauper when the crowds arrive every summer.A personal favourite might be around Dunoon in Scotland, but that's only because I know it. I'm sure there are plenty of similar locations with plenty of space around, great scenery and the possibility of work nearby. OK you'd have to put up with the wee fishwife, but she'll not be around forever!3

Lets add detached and at least 3beds.
There are 182 to pick from but a further 266 were SSTC so missed out on them.
(some are just plots or land or derelict or auction or park)
probably a few more in Scotland that are not on rightmove.
