Car hire excess in europe? Maximum amount

I am hoping someone on here will be answer to my query as I am going no where with the company involved or other relevant advisors -

When damage is occurred whilst using a hire car can the hire car company demand more money than what is stated as the excess amount on the contract? Or is the stated excess amount the maximum amount you are liable to pay?

In Europe the CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) covers the hirer for the cost of any damage incurred, except for the excess amount. So no, if CDW is included there should be no demand for anything more, unless there are extenuating circumstances that invalidate the CDW such as drunkenness etc.
