Help - plaster crumbling near skirting board!

Dont know if its silk, but does have a decent sheen to it. Definitely plan to sand it... In the hallway there was light grey which had less sheen than this but more than the Dulux Easycare matt I was planning to put. I did not sand it and took the chance, just cleaned with Sugar soap and seems to have worked - survived the fingernail scratch test.
Sheen level seems to also depend on the brand! Among the two brands I have used in the last two weeks - Dulux and Valspar - Dulux Easycare Matt has more sheen than Valspar V700 Matt. As per B&Q staff they are equivalent, Valspar V700 is supposedly superior
. Time will tell but yeah Valspar was easier to put, needed fewer coats, and deeper colour.
Now to the next challenge - in the kitchen there is a pine unit for use as pantry. Basically the IKEA Ivar range. It has been used as is, i.e. raw pine, for like 5+ years without any finish/treatment. Its covered in coffee and wine stains, grease from cooking, and what not. The only option I have is degrease with methylated spirit and sand it down, then finish with water based varnish or osmo oil? You reckon I should start a new thread for it?

Be careful with the Valspar stuff - Some people have reported a strong smell of cat urine after using the stuff...As for using methylated spirit for cleaning, unless you can get hold of Industrial Denatured Alcohol (meths without the purple dye), you could end up with a purple/blue stain. And if you use a solvent on grease/oil deposits, there is a good chance that it will soak further in to the wood.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -

Yup - new thread!'Silk' has a definite sheen, and that's how the blue looks to me in your photo, but it could just be light conditions.I would definitely regrease it (sugarsoap or similar) and then an overall keying to cut away that sheen and any high spots.0 -
Cheers, I have started a new thread.
Re Valspar paint smell, I thought that was a while ago, but will keep an eye on it. So far have used their paints in 3 rooms - 2 for walls and 1 on wood panelling and had no issues. Loved the colour and ease of use.0 -

There was (is) a long thread on this, but it was some time ago, and almost certainly isn't an issue any more. Usually considered a good quality paint, I understand.

Cat pee that must not have been nice!
There is definitely a different smell to valspar...to me it reminds of an old vegetable oil mill that was near my house growing up!
