Rip-off dealer servicing tactics

Colleague here today, his car is in for a service and its first MOT with a 'large Scottish dealership'
It's only done 16000, yet he's getting a video recommending he replaces the rear discs because of 'rust around the edges'
Cosmetic rust only, it would take seconds with a wire brush to fix and nowhere near an MOT fail.
Where do these people get off recommending discs with 16K on them need replaced?
Then there was the 'fuel additive'.....
Fair chance if I hadn't been here he'd have said yes to them all and been £160+ down.
Makes my blood boil.

Well it all depends on which edge of the disc is showing rust?

If it’s part of what should be the swept area where pad contact should be made, I’d say the garage were right to recommend changing the pads and discs.

Even colleagues have to learn to grow a spine.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Fred has been quiet lately ... shall we expect his usual commentary shortly? 😁

I'm sure he brews his own fuel additive.
    And drinks it.

It's a fair point. Most rust would have been removed on the trip to the dealership. First MOT means it's 3 years old and has done about 5k/year, so it's probably spent a lot of time standing and the rust may become an issue (assuming it's even an MOT advisory).

However, lots of large chain garages, particularly ones that should like click fit or carnold shark have a bad rep for making up work needing done.

It's probably fine but he can always get it checked elsewhere if he's worried; the grubbier the office space the better.

Take it as read it's not on the swept area.

What are you sighing at? Which part of my response is incorrect or bores you to tears so much?

Does your colleague have photos of the exact area of the disc that is rusting?

    Recommending. NOT needing....
