You assume they have impersonated you but it could be the council records were not updated and your name is the last on record.3

Would you normally do that? Specifically inform the council that you've moved out of somewhere, then inform them again that you've moved in to somewhere else? Or would you simply notify the council of your new address (to set up CT payments) and assume that they'd remove your name from the old place? (I suspect that the majority of people would take the latter approach).born_again said:

If it's within the same council area they'd take all the info, but I'd expect two separate tasks if you're moving between council areas. They're not likely to remove your name without knowing who the new payer is meant to be.Jenni_D said:

Yes, if moving out of the council area. If staying in the same area, then updating your details should be enough. Or at least it has wen we have moved 3 times in the same council area.Jenni_D said:

Only one thing, OP did say >I have a property of my own< but no mention of if they moved into this when they left the rented property.Life in the slow lane1 -
Personally I would never assume anything, for the sake of a phone call I would make sure the relevant people had been informed.Jenni_D said:

To the above replies ... the OP talks about a "village". It can be reasonably assumed (and I did) that the same council area applies.

When I moved ot was out of the area but the form I completed to tell them asked if I was moving within the same area or moving out of the area.1

Just to give you more insight....I would of course have let the council know I was ending my rental agreement and moving. If I hadnt I would have assumed the debt would have been more than £1500.The property has been empty for a number of years since I left. The woman who I believe is responsible for the fraud(because it is actually fraud) has probably signed something with my name on with my signature making me responsible for the debt.I know the woman fairly well...and she is always friendly with me.I am taking my time and not making her aware that I know what she has PROBABLY done.I dont want anything that may prejudice any sort of legal action or the passing over of her debt to its rightful owner. As an aside I invested 2 grand into the property when I moved in to make it habitable.I do have another property in the village and I di move back into it0

You need to stop waffling and stop making baseless accusations.
Speak to the council, let them know you don't live there/rent it/own it and get them to recall the debt.2 -
And don't get any idea about a criminal prosecution as from experience of similar years ago that isn't likely to happen.0
