Future vehicle excise duty

I understand that in the future - the government is going to have to tax electric vehicles (due to a lack / loss of revenue) - but at what rate ?
Is it likely that my present low emission car (2017 Suzuki Swift) will continue to be taxed at £30 or will that increase as well ?

  • Who knows? It wouldn't be unreasonable for it to change to a levy/ tax based on mileage.

I agree - for anyone who drives under the average mileage per year (7400 miles)
but it would still have to have different rates for different emission cars
    Way too complex to resolve

Maybe road pricing is coming in the future.

I'm sure that road pricing will be the final outcome - a GPS module in every vehicle and a monthly bill.

As long as they leave my lovely zero-VED diesel alone I don't mind.

It emits fresh air. The zero VED rate demonstrates that conclusively.

    :)

I thought that measured emissions were limited to Carbon monoxide rather than particulates?

Umm, I thought you referred regularly to your disabilities - aren't you on free VED?

Nobody can predict what future budgets will change, BUT usually there are inflationary increases and no more. Changing the basis of taxation normally only applies to newly registered cars. Most 2017 cars would be post-CO2 taxation, £150 flat rate - yours must have been registered in the first three months of that year.
