Homebuyer vs Full survey advice and how do you find and chose Independent surveyor - York area

Hello, 
I have had an offer accepted on a house in York last week. 
I am a first time buyer. I have (finally) found a conveyancer so things are going to start moving along. I am still undecided on which mortgage to for, and I understand some lenders will offer a 'free valuation' as incentive, but I now also understand it is very likely only a 'basic valuation'. So I want to have an independent survey done. 

Question is which one: 'homebuyer' or 'full' survey? 

I am lining towards a 'Full' survey because the property is old (I understand it dates from XXth c., single brick wall assumed; split in 2 dwellings in the 70s), though it has been recently updated and extended 3 years ago (EPC C). But I noticed damp rising on the outside wall (street side) on the property and the one attached to it, and rising even higher on the outbuilding wall also attached to property from the property on the other side (it has a slop roof half way up 'my' property and it is open, a bit like a covered terrace and used a 'garden shed'). Also I am not sure if the Homebuyer survey will give me details on state of roof and electricity wiring. 

Then the next question is where do I look for an independent surveyor and how do I pick the one for my need? (York area). Sure I can google but then hard to tell and compare services and quote I find. 

Any tips, comment and advice welcome.

    Get a few quotes from approved local surveyors (link below), they should send you details of their services and an example report.

    I asked the estate agents and my solicitor if they had any recommendations. Then I googled them to find their reviews to double check. Figured if they'd got experience of them from previous sales it might make things easier down the road.
    28th April - MIP submitted and issued
    23rd June - Offer Finally Accepted On A House!
    23rd June - Full application submitted through broker
    19th July - Mortgage offer received
    23rd July - Draft contract received
    26th July - Searches requested
    2nd August - Survey completed
