Unwanted excessive insurance for Samsung mobile

A student relative ordered a new mid range Samsung phone and ticked the box to get one month free insurance, with the form stating there was no further commitment. This was followed by a certificate of insurance with Allianz Assistance the next day, stating he had insured his phone for two years, having to pay an eye watering £59.88 per month, totaling £1437.12. When contacting Samsung, the response was that the insurance can be cancelled by ignoring an e-mail that should be received at the end of the first month. Would Samsung really sell insurance for that amount? Has this happened to anybody else? And what actions have you taken? Many thanks,

Are you sure that those figures do not include the cost of the phone? A quick check of the Samsung website suggests that their Samsung Care+ product costs nothing like that amount. However, they are plausible figures for certain handsets bought together with insurance.1

No. You need to check the facts with your relative.greygardener said:Would Samsung really sell insurance for that amount?Evolution, not revolution1 -
Thanks for your responses. The phone was paid for separately (£330 with student discount), to be followed by the certificate of insurance for a monthly payment of £59.88. Having contacted the Allianz Assistance complaints department, they acknowledged they offer this type of insurance. We are awaiting a further call back from their specific department dealing with this insurance.Unfortunately, the facts are correct as I have seen the certificate of insurance.0

They don’t offer a plan at £59.88 a month. The most they charge is £8 a month. Are you sure you’re not looking at the excess charge?greygardener said:Thanks for your responses. The phone was paid for separately (£330 with student discount), to be followed by the certificate of insurance for a monthly payment of £59.88. Thanks again for thinking along and checking things out too.there is no excess charge: this is what is says on the 'certificate of insurance':
Samsung Care+ UK Galaxy 2-
Monthly Appliance Protection - Accidental Damage GBP59.88* Monthly (*inclusive of IPT)
We are confused and getting more concerned about this whole process.

Just spoken to Allianz Assistance again, who now state that they do not offer telephone insurance. They can not deal with this issue over the phone and we have been asked to provide information about the insurance and they will look into it further. This sounds more and more worrying, an insurance company that does not offer telephone insurance, has its logo on a certificate of insurance offered by Samsung Care+.

Allianz are they the non UK insurance company ??

The confusion with the agent at Allianz Assistance may possibly be because mobile phone insurance does not appear to be something that they offer directly; they make no mention of it on their website. However, they are most definitely involved with the Samsung Care+ product. The Ts and Cs for Samsung Care+ advise contacting Samsung on 0330 726 7864 if you have a policy query, so I'd try that if you have not done so already.0

They are also with Monzo premium0
