EU passport validity

Options
Hello clever people

i have a holiday booked for 28th July. I have an Irish (EU) passport but it is due to expire 26/10/2021

I’ve just applied in a panic for a renewed Irish passport but someone has just told me that I can go to Spain with my current passport.

couple of questions please. Is this true? Can I fly from uk to Spain with current passport? Secondly, what do I do if my new passport arrives when I am away? Is my current one still valid?

what a nightmare! Had a shocking time recently and this is just the icing on the cake!!

EU to EU rules haven't changed, you only need the passport to be valid on the date of return. It is those with non-EU passports, UK for example, that may have an issue. With respect, chasing for an answer less than an hour after asking the question is expecting rather too much from a forum!

Alan I do apologize I couldn’t see my post so it was a test. I have deleted it.

Thank you so much for your reply.

do you know what happens with regards to my new passport potentially arriving whilst I am away? I am still valid to travel home on the current passport?

I don't think your new passport will be issued before you have surrendered your current one, assuming Irish passport authorities have the same procedure as most countries including UK.

The irish passport service dont require the old passport to be surrendered if its valid for less than 12 months, I renewed my irish passport recently online and didn't have to send the old one back :)

However I know the UK passport office do require them to be surrendered regardless of remaining validity.

In regards to the OP's question yes you will be fine, there is no minimum validity period when travelling to EU countries or back to the UK on an EU member state issued Passport or National Identity Card, they are valid right up until expiry.
