Closed Barclayard account.

I recently rang Barclaycard and asked them to close my account which they were happy to do after me trying to get through for about 20 minutes and going through all the automated BS . I knew I had a small balance on there of around £9 so asked the person I was speaking to how to get that cleared or whichever way was easiest to close it etc. They said I could pay if off there and then with my debit card and then they could close the account straight away, this was a few days ago.

After logging on a few times everything is still working and appears 'open' balance showing as zero, all good I suppose. I'm thinking maybe it takes a week or two before I won't be able to log on as the account should no longer exist, not too bothered about that part BUT I log on today £8.99 pending transaction showing, It's one of daughters subscription things that I asked her to change a few months ago but we all know how kids listen don't we.

What happens now with that pending transaction? will the DD pay it off (thankfully I haven't cancelled DD yet) OR will it be rejected OR will I have to go through the rigmarole of calling them again and clearing the balance with my debit card?

I've not cancelled a credit card in years so a bit out of touch with correct protocols, advice appreciated.

I am in the same boat as you with two NewDays CC. Closed two months ago, app still working and still appearing as open on credit report.

I have been told it can take up to 3 months.
However, when I’ve closed my capital one it only took 3 weeks to update on credit report and app stopped working immediately.
  • Set your direct debit to clear in full and get the charge removed asap or it'll keep rebilling. Depending on the card provider, it should stop charges in the future when closed

The DD is/was set as 'full balance' and the card provider is the one in the title. I cleared the outstanding balance with the agent on the phone and they confirmed account closure so my question is more why have they allowed a new charge to be put on an account that technically should be closed.

I know the provider, just too lazy to look up the Ts & Cs ;)

The charge could have been set to go ahead months ago, hence the charge going through

Fair enough, I guess I could just wait till next statement is produced and see if it says on it balance WILL be collected by DD. That was the other minor thing that got my brain ticking over, will the DD still be 'active' now I've cancelled the account? if yes no probs balance is cleared AGAIN!! and hopefully they then 'ACTUALLY' close it. If DD is not taken then potentially a late payment marker gets applied, not what I want for a piddling amount of £8.99.

I'm also trying to avoid having to ring them again as it's a right faff to get through. I don't understand how they've allowed this charge to go on the account when I got confirmation off the 'nice' person on the phone that everything was now paid and account would be closed straightaway?

The charge that went on is a monthly subscription that looks like one I've missed (my fault, well my daughters fault lol) but these card providers are quick to decline or stop payments in other areas but appear lax in CPA's. FWIW I believe that new charge should have bounced back as soon as I requested closure of the account but looks like it hasn't so maybe I will have to ring them and put it right, good old Barclaycard.

DD isn't cancelled unless you do it and they don't go inactive until 12 months or so - the bank would be wise not to cancel it anyway due to the issue of trailing interest. In your case it shouldn't matter but as a general rule the bank won't do it without instruction to avoid any issues of interest coming back to bite them.

CPAs are a well known issue - if the instruction goes through to cancel it, the bank shouldn't pay it, but closing the card doesn't necessarily divest you of responsibility to pay something you have contractually agreed to do and they can still charge the card

I'm familiar with my responsibilities on paying, I know how to cancel CPA's direct with the company who's requesting one and how the banks will 'step in' if the company doesn't play ball with a cancellation request but here's the question, although I've messed up with the subscription (changed card detail on that subscription now so would assume that's all resolved) will the DD come out as normal even though I asked for the account to be closed? this I have no experience of.

It looks like I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this account to avoid possibility of missed or late payment marker and I don't mind doing that but shouldn't have to really!! how hard can it be to close an account, I'm glad I didn't cancel DD but what a faff to just bin Barclaycard, I'm also glad I don't close credit accounts regularly, I'm only closing Barclaycard because new limit is about as much use as t*ts on a boar.

Appreciate the links, advice and comments.

Ringing barclaycard isnt as hard as you make out..yes you have to wait and listen to robotic frustrating stupid options but you do get through to a person and they can help .

Sometimes it takes a few trys if you mess up the options which is easily done .

I find putting the phone on speaker and doing/completing another task online the best way to stay productive while waiting or cooking or tiding up ..whatever suits !

You can do alot worse than barclaycard customer service, overall its not that bad at all .

It is due to Continuous Payment Authorities not going for authorisation. Also it can take a while for actual closure to be finalised. Usually the person on the phone can not close the account down, it will be done by another team, as they have to ensure that the balance is at zero & making a debit card payment at that point when you spoke to them will take a few days to actually debit. So until it has fully debited they can not close the account.

CPA's can keep opening the account each month & little a bank can do about them. You need to contact the company and stop it as well as asking Barclaycard to put a stop on it at their end.

Not suggesting you didn't understand things by the way, sorry if it read like that.

Just a general statement re CPAs, people often read these threads months or years later and inevitably bump it and ask you how you got on, so sometimes it helps to have the solution written down for them to read
