I used to have the formula 1 live timing on my iPad and to get that in sync with the sky sports hd coverage, I had to pause it 10-13 seconds each race!  The tv pictures were that far behind live!

That's not unusual for sporting events, the website will be in real time.  The whole online coverage/timings/score thing acts as a spoiler if you're not careful.  You can see the same thing for Wimbledon, which way the point will go before it happens on TV.
  • There is a lot of stuff in the transmission chain before it hits your panel, then include your panel. Each code/decode takes a finite amount of time, different kit will have different delays, coding profiles will affects it and it depends then if down converts are used for a master, say a 4k feed, to derive the HD and SD. That is before you start messing with satellite. That could be 5-6 seconds on a standard HD feed. Again dependant on what is happening. 4k made it more interesting in timing.
Wonder when we will get 8k? (me not expecting it soon).

    Also ...
BBC1 SD is faster than BBC1 HD
Just now going through old threads of mine that have new replies and i totally forgot about this thread after making it so never actually saw any replies.

I can't remember whether we were watching in HD or not now but that's good to know. I always suspected it.

Also wasn't aware of the aerial vs HDMI thing.

As for how our TV is connected, the aerial from the roof goes in to the rear of the BT YouView box.
The BT YouView box is connected to the router via cat6 cable and also to the TV via HDMI cable.

I notice that BBC clock is 10 seconds behind our radio controlled clock
I assumed that it was in case something went wrong and this gave them 10 seconds to switch off the program to save shocking viewers
    Eg) Fiona Bruce keeling over

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

This is due to delays in the creation of the digital signal.  It will always be behind radio controlled clocks.  Platform it varies, but is typically 8-10 seconds.
