..I have a friend that has a really odd driving style and always drives everywhere at around 40 mph, ironically they have recently been done for speeding at 40mph in a 30 limit!..............

You should be suggesting, quite strongly, to your friend that he stops driving.

    ..she....
That doesn’t make it any safer or more acceptable.

..not suggesting it does or doesn't. just correcting an assumption made by somebody else....

Which makes your handle rather apt lol ;)
  • How many modern 6 speed manual cars can maintain 20mph in top gear?
Also remember "automatics" my 6 speed auto will be in 4th at that speed so emissions will be increased

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Why would you drive at 20mph in 6th gear? Just looking at your rev counter will tell you that you could get, for example, the same revs travelling at 20mph in 3rd compared to 70mph in 6th. Emissions may change up or down, although the evidence suggests that reduced speed does reduce emissions in some circumstances, but my reading of it is that the main reason for the change is to stop people being killed on the roads.
The new 20mph limit in Wales replaces the old default 30mph limit, but I still wouldn't drive through a 30mph limit in 6th gear. I've driven in Oxfordshire where they have 50mph limits on rural roads as soon as you cross the border, and seems pointless to me, but this change will largely apply to urban areas or through villages. Not a huge issue IMO.

There are places where a 20 mph speed limit is appropriate, (eg our high street), then again there are places where it's just a complete nonsense, (eg our bypass, that is wide and has wide pavements both sides).
Rather than take the logic approach of looking at each case Wales likes to be seen to be "the first", and it is simpler to just take a blanket approach, even though the evidence suggets otherwise. But when did facts actually matter to politicians?? ...that's Drakeford fo you...
    Welcome to Wales!!

I've driven the length of the M4 (ironically to Wales) with my car in economy mode and diligently kept it blue.
When I got to Swansea I accelerated from a couple of sets of lights and blew the entire saving!
