Matt vs Silk Paint

The problem with silk is you can't paint over it, so to add more paint of a different colour or  even more silk you will need to sand it or paint over it with 123, which if you have a large area is a pita, vinyl matt is almost universally used these days

I have successfully painted over silk w/o any problems. What was I supposed to encounter?
