I remember seeing a policeman standing guard on a rolls royce outside St James park ,Newcastle,s ground ,i am sure it was owned by Sir John Hall and the number plate was rigged to read NUFC so not the same rules for all

A uniformed police officer does not need a reason to stop youEbe_Scrooge said:As others have said, you can in theory be pulled over for having a numberplate that doesn't comply with the rules on spacing or letter size. In practice it's unlikely - though, as Grumpy Chap says, it does give them a legitimate reason to stop you if they have a suspicion that something else may be amiss.

One mot tester took a dislike to the plate.AdrianC said:
Some years ago, there was an Audi Q7 near where I lived. The plate was in a godawful script font, mis-spaced to sort-of-read "LUCYLOU", if you squinted a bit.Abbafan1972 said:I have seen quite a few where a screw head had been placed to make a particular character look like something else.
Also there is a car that goes around my neighbourhood (not seen it for a while tbh). It's CE12 YSX. The 2 has been slanted and put really close to the 1 and it's all been run together to read CERYSX. I wonder if she's ever been stopped?
One day, it was bearing perfectly standard plates, spaced properly. LU57 LOU.
Somehow, I don't think that was going to be interpreted in the intended fashion.0 -
It was not at a time when plates were included in the test.DB1904 said:

I think they would be more likely to pull over an old car driven by a young person wearing a baseball cap than a nice car with wrong spacing.Car_54 said:A uniformed police officer does not need a reason to stop you

I tend to view all these sort of plates asT 1TS.0

That would probably be quite an expensive number plate to acquire id, indeed, it exists or is available.greyteam1959 said:T 1TS.

But many of those expensive private plates are not displayed in a regular way. How did that come about?greyteam1959 said:I tend to view all these sort of plates asT 1TS.

If you look on the interweb you'll find several companies advertising what are called "display" plates. They are illegal on the public roads because they do not comply with the regs (in terms of font size and type, spacing etc) and are meant to be intended for display purposes only, and not for use on public roads.
Apart from spacing and font type and size etc, all plates are also meant to include the supplier's post code and the relevant British Standard number for number plates, otherwise they are illegal. (There are several parked along my road which do not comply - one belongs to a neighbour who is a doctor. Should I tell her I wonder?)
You occasionally see cases on Pepipoo, like this one: number plate offence - FightBack Forums (pepipoo.com)
It obviously isn't a priority for my local police force as I see several illegal plates every day.
