All unused mobile numbers (whether they expire through lack of use or otherwise) go back into the pool and get reassigned. It wouldn't have sat in the pool for "a few years", such is the demand for numbers, its more likely to have been reassigned within a year to 18 months.

Your phone is still working OK?
Having dealt with Vodafone, they are very difficult to deal with (great when things go well & terrible when they don't).
Google the CEO email & try that - tell them you own the number & that you insist they stop messaging you about someone else's account.Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!0 -
It appears the person had my asda sim number attached to their account and the number was last disconnected in 2017!
Looks like they have a current contract through vodafone (£44, not MSE :-) ) and vodafone need to confirm they can unassociate it.0 -
That reminds me of a set of T&Cs that I laughed at - the user committed to notify the site of any number change & indemnified it against any costs arising from failing to do so. Exactly for this scenario.Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!0
