What age will you stop driving?

The Queen drove her iconic Range Rover to one of her favourite events in a busy schedule on her return to Windsor Castle.

The monarch, 95, had been on a whistle-stop tour of Scotland all week but managed to get back just in time for her much loved Royal Windsor Horse Show.

This just came up in my news feed and I was shocked. I don't know any 95-year-olds, but I think you would need to be a special person to be a safe driver over the age of 90.
I don't know what my health will be like when I am 80, but I have just renewed my driving licence which will take me up to the age of 70 and I am thinking about whether or not it might be my final licence.

If you look on here there is someone fighting for their 87 year old mothers license because its been taken away as she "accidentally" ticked the wrong box on the form.

I think its a very personal thing and the 90 year old and their close family are unlikely to be the best ones to decide as the degeneration happens slowly over time. I remember dealing with 3 motor claims in a month when the same c78 year old mistook the brake and accelerator whilst trying to park and hit 5+ cars each time. We barred him from being insured by us but his 50 year old son was on the phone arguing he was a great driver and it was just the new car that confused him.

My mother stopped driving around 84 after pulling out in front of car coming from her left which wrote of her car and the other car.  That was enough for her and us but fortunately she made the decision not to get another car.

Better to give up driving a day too early than a day too late.

So she drove 2 miles from Windsor Castle to Windsor showground accompanied by a lady in waiting in the passenger seat and a detective in the back.

My dad was still driving at 99, I aim to copy him. Although by the time I'm 99 cars should be driving themselves.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

I will continue driving as long as I am safe to.  This might be sooner than I feel I want to, but I would rather give up before the bad accident than after.

FWIW, my father in law gave up driving because his eyesight had deteriorated too much (consultant led care). My mother in law then had to restart driving but gave up when their car gave up.  She’s insured on my car and renews her licence, but she’s very very very unlikely to drive again - and that’s fine as we are more than happy to drive her around.

Nor does she have a licence ;)
  • I was once driving through a village near me when I stopped to let an old dear who was walking slowly using a stick cross the road in front of me, it was a sunny day and my window was down, a pedestrian on the path said to me
    ‘she’s a 102 doesn’t she do well’
’yes’ I said as I watched her get in the driving seat of a car parked at the curb!
