Can I apply for a credit card a few weeks before I start my new job?

Hi guys,

I'm a recent UK grad and I'm starting my first job in a few weeks. Can I apply for a credit card now putting in my new salary or do I need to wait a few months after starting?

thanks!!

You'll need an income so wait until you're in employment.

Putting your salary now would be a fraudulent application, which is high on the list of 'Things You Don't Want To Do'.

Yes, but your chances would be low. Wait a couple of months at least and then place your application appropriately.

I see, thanks! I'm just in a rush to improve my credit score so I can buy property ASAP. I may just use the bits app for now and get a credit card in a few months.

I would wait till you receive your first payslip incase you need to proof - That what I did last year when I applied to Amex and nationwide.

did you get two credit cards in a short space of time? also, I have been told by Santander I have been pre-approved for a £4000 credit limit.. I will never spend that much so am I better off getting a smaller credit limit that I will actually use (for my credit score)

Getting a credit card will not improve it just like that.. For that you need "experian credit boost" 🤦‍♂️🤣

Anyway (here it comes folks) lenders do not see your credit score. They will be interested in your credit history & income to expenditure ratio. And debt exposure (but if you do not have a credit card or other loans that may not be a issue)
In fact if you are only just starting a job, some mortgage providers will not be too forthcoming with offers. They will want to see some stability of income.

Pesonally, if I was in your position I'd take that offer from Santander. There's no problem with a high limit that you don't use, it's much better than having a limit which is too low!

I will take the santander offer- I just don't know when to apply to minimise my chances of rejection, and increase my time having the card to use and build my credit history!
