I gave a part deposit towards a flat that I plan to rent at the end of june. I have no contract as of yet, the landlord and I planned to set it up when I pay the remaining deposit and the full months rent at the end of june. The landlord has now contacted me to say that for family reasons he needs to give me back the deposit and is not in a position to rent out the flat. does anyone know where I stand. as I say there is not contract.

You may not have a written contract, but you have a verbal one. I don't think you are going to be able to enforce it though.
I think you are going to have to take this as a lesson learned for the future. Do not ever hand over money without a written agreement. At least he is going to give you the deposit back.0 -
I agree
it's a pity but I don't think you will get anywhere
better to put your energies into finding somewhere else
