We are travelling near to the beginning of the school holidays in England. I'm looking for a travel insurance policy that will cover the cost of us having to cancel our trip if we are told we need to self isolate because of contact with a positive case.
All the policies that I am looking at require proof of self isolation from NHS Test and Trace but if it is one of my children that is required to self isolate the notification will come from the school and not directly from the NHS. The insurers that
Is there a policy that will cover us in this situation? Surely it must be a common problem for everyone with kids at the moment.

Given the reasonable likelihood of this actually happening, I don't think you will find an insurer offering this sort of cover. Insurance being for unforeseen events, and this - as you rightly say - being a common problem.

Doubt you will find the insurance but the school will have the NHS notification and can give it you.

It might be a common problem, but look at it from an insurer's perspective. The odds of this happening for a family with two school age children is roughly one in three, so to make a profit on top, when averaged over a large group the premium would need to be roughly half the cost of the holiday, an insurance fee which no one would be prepared, so they do not offer it.

This is one of those situations where you make a decision based on the dates and current circumstances and it requires you to self insure.

If your children are young I would be tempted to take them out of school a few days early.

  • How will Border Control etc know if your child is isolating because of the nonsensical school bubble rules? Asking for a friend.

Nobody is going to cover you for this.  There are some that may cover medical costs due to COVID, but not trip cancellations.  The amount they'd have to charge is well in excess of what people would be willing to pay, given the high likelihood of trip cancellations due to COVID.

I doubt they would. Your friend’s problem will be if they then contract covid when abroad.

What I meant was that if you travel abroad, ignoring the fact the child is meant to be isolating, and then the child had covid when abroad, you would be stuck. You couldn't travel back and I doubt insurance would pay out on the grounds you were meant to be isolating not travelling.

I'll tell my friend he doesn't need to worry then. The sooner they get rid of the nonsensical isolation rules the better for everyone. If you have Covid symptoms isolate. If you haven't don't. Seems simple enough to me.
