Id suggest you start with using paypal to get you up and running then spend a few days / weeks looking into the best payment option to fit your long term business model.

Once youve got the account of your choice set up it should then be a simple case of taking your site down for a few hours to modifiy the payment options (you could even leave paypal up as a secondary payment method for those who prefer it).

A lot will depend on the build and ecommerce platform you're using. Example, if you're on a Magento build then Opayo (SagePay) is best, however if you're using Wordpress (Woocommerce) then there's a new free plugin called payments which basically sends to your account in a couple of days - https://woocommerce.com/products/woocommerce-payments/

The above are the primary two ecommerce / CMS platforms if you're doing it yourself; otherwise you can buy ready made systems like Shopify etc.

Just bear in mind when taking cards direct you'll need to be PCI compliant. Can cost tens of thousands.

Do you have a specific "business bank account"? Rather than a "personal.account" that you're using for your business... if you don't you need to open one as well.

Using a personal account for business transactions is usually against the T&Cs and risks getting your account frozen or closed by the bank.
No I dont have biz account. And my bank(s) Lloyds and RBS said I could only open one up online and it would take upto 28 days
But thanks for the warning! As I am sure that what I am selling I would be the first to be picked off as breach of contract

Going in there paying a grand into someone ells account to purchase stock; and they are asking to many questions that dose not concern them
    Again thanks for the warning!
  • Yes I am new to this! But with the right advertising I see sale increaseing a lot
So give us some figures to work with like I asked above.

If your turnover is going to be £12 a month or £40598 a month - different total sales values - different average transaction values will point you to different providers.

Nobody is going to offer you payment processing for free or near enough - you have to price it in to your business model.
I dont intend to do much trade for the first week or so. But I would expect the site to pick up after
Is there anything suitable for selling the odd one or two things and as trade picks up then swapping payment server?

Pay pal fees are 2.9% + 30p. And to do it with someones card into my bank account; my banks I use Lloyds and RBS say that I need a business account and can only be done online and can take up to 4 weeks to process; no good!

whats a merchant account? is it the same thing as opening a paypal account
Do you know of anything less then 25 quid a month

Would that mean that my customers do not need to log in or have a SP account to purchase goods from my site?

Why is 4 weeks no good? They take as long as they take, no bank is just going to give you one without 1st going through some basic checks.
Do you have a business plan?
    What are you selling?
How much do you expect to sell?👍

I suggest you do a lot more research on how to run a business. As this just sounds like "I've had a idea to make some money"

Rather than rely on others to do the work for you
The last time I set a BA up I went into the bank and it was done there and then thankyou
  • Wouldn't this thread be better off over on the 'small businesses' part of the forum ?

    Thanks will do!

For that scale of business you might be OK with something like Zettle or SumUp rather than a full-on SagePay etc. account. Mrs QrizB uses SumUp for her art business and seems quite happy with it.
Edit to add: Zettle seem to offer website plugins, I'm not sure about SumUp.

  • Who is Mrs QrizB?
Persides the price; I dont think SumUp is what I am looking for
******You have to be around for a little while longer before you can post links.*****

  • I managed to set up a Zettle account thnaks. As it said it was free on some of the stuff
But I have no idea what I am supposed to do now!
