I agree it's been a while since I've bought a system but TBH I'd be everso wary of an installer who tells me to "see how it goes" and is advising putting a magic fluid into the heating system to try and make it work better.
If you want to claim RHI then the system has to be properly designed, installed and commissioned by an MCS accredied installer and the appropriate heating calculations are a prerequisite to getting the RHI.
"Suck it and see" doesn't sound much like a correctly designed system.
Just my opinion you understandNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -

Radiators work by transferring heat from the fluid inside them to the metal of the radiator and then to the air. It's the rate of heat transfer from the metal to the air that matters almost all of the time, except perhaps when you are starting your heating from cold. The rate of heat transfer from the radiator to the air is mostly due to its surface area which is why modern high-efficiency radiators have a lot of fins. But a radiator at, say, 45 C average temperature will transfer the same heat to a room whether it is filled with water, mercury or snake oil. Now over time internal corrosion can cause radiators to accumulate gunge that reduces their efficiency but if you change the radiators, as you will almost certainly need to, that won't be an issue
An MCS accredited installer should perform a detailed heat loss calculation for every room (and corridor) in your dwelling and use this to calculate the size of radiator required for your chosen operating temperature and then present you with the results. You need an MCS accredited installer to get the RHI and "see how it goes" equates to no RHI in my mind.Reed0 -
I don’t know if I’m late answering this, but we are having a complete new system installed for free. There was a government grant accessed by some councils to cover the cost for a variety of different homes and Newcastle City Council (that’s Newcastle upon Tyne) got £3.9M. We just filled in a form, had a phone conversation, had a physical survey done and a system designed for our house, costed out at just under £14k with the pump and all new radiators and it’s 100% funded. No means testing, just monitored closely for the first year. Worth checking out if other councils have this money available!
