It appears from a search you can in theory. But may find that the retailer wants you to enter the pin to cover any chance of a stolen card..

HSBC say NO at either ATM or retailer
Barclays say YES at a ATM
Santander used to do the same at ATM

Is it a big retail chain or a local corner shop?

You could go back and buy exactly the same pork pie and exactly the same cigarettes and see what the bill comes to.

If they have a CCTV system, you could also ask them to review the footage, provide them with a date, time and what colour clothes you were wearing, and they might be able to track you down to see if something got scanned twice accidentally.

If you have your online access showing the transaction value, you could also screenshot that - edit out any other details - and then go show them, and say this is what you charged me for two items.
