Is our vendor serious or should we move on?

I don’t know what the cost and other implications are if proceedings are issued against you? The courts are pretty backlogged at the moment, so any eviction is likely to be slow, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t get a bill for costs. Also, if the accommodation is work related, that might make it difficult to find new work.I think you need to talk to your vendor, to find out what’s going on. Nobody here can help you. You may well have to find something to rent, and the sooner you know where you stand, the better. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Whilst whilst I agree with the comments suggesting you stay put as it will take months untill anything reaches court - I would suggest great caution is taken if the house is provided as part of your husbands job.
Playing awkward might not do his employment prospects much good at all.
Reading the OP it does however appear as if the husband no longer is In that employment - however I would only recommend staying put as an absolute last resort
I would suggest you just get a rental sorted asap0 -

Our vendor doesn’t even have a home buying survey booked until next month, two months after they offered. After being told, ASAP, we will move, blah, blah (don’t they all). There is no talk of exchange.
It would be very odd for them to just not bother doing anything for two months. It's possible that they weren't going to bother with a survey and decided to have one at the last minute but that doesn't necessarily mean it's holding up the sale.
Can you talk to your vendor directly and find out exactly what is going on? That way you won't feel as though you are being kept in the dark and - maybe more importantly - you won't have your imagination running wild.
We're 7 weeks in, no ongoing chain at their end and we are FTB paying cash. Despite both parties wanting to move as fast as possible, their solicitors haven't replied to our first set of enquiries yet. We have no dates whatsoever and their solicitor is so slow (online conveyancing shed) that we might still be waiting in August despite out solicitor originally estimating 10 July.
It sounds like there are huge communication gaps between the parties in your chain and the only way you'll know anything for sure is by talking directly to your vendor.Living with Lupus is like juggling with butterflies3 -

You really really need to sort out alternative accommodation and let the sale proceed at its own pace. Two months to buy is way too short and it’s just a recipe to stress yourself and other people. It might be worth pulling out, move into rental and then buy as this purchase is unlikely to complete in time. For all you know it might not even complete at all.Initial mortgage bal £487.5k, current £258k, target £243,750(halfway!)

Is the chain complete? 8 weeks to not have done anything if the chain is complete, unacceptable. Waiting until chain is complete before spending money out on things, that's different.0

This would almost certainly be cheaper than moving into private rented temporarily.0 -
Ask to stay where you are and offer more rent.
