I have just won an item, and have just gone to pay, but, the seller has asked for extra if paying by paypal. This was not in the listing and I was under the impression that this is not allowed by e-bay.
So do I have to pay the extra if paying by paypal, my prefereed method of payment, infact I rearely bid on any items which don't accept it as a method of payment.

If it was not on the auction you don't have to pay.
If he gets nasty and threatens a Neg , tell him you will send a copy of his e-mail to Ebay who will NARU him.

Whether it was detailed in the item listing or not, you should not have to pay a Paypal surcharge...that's the sellers responsibility. If he/she wanted cover those costs he/she should have calculated the Paypal fee into the item cost.
ejones999 above gives good advice.0 -
Don't pay it. Tell him you have sent a copy of his emails to eBay.....0

Sellers are no longer allowed to charge a surcharge to cover Paypal fees, and they can't ask you to pay anything over & above what they have stated in their auction. You would be right to refuse to pay the extra. If he wants to make a fuss about it, you can report him to Ebay as the others have said.0

True. But if it was in the auction (not in this case btw) then tough if you bid on it win and then decide to argue. TBH eBay don't give an Australian beer for it. More fees to them you see..............................."Success is not to be measured by the position someone has reached in life, but the obstacles he has overcome while trying to succeed." A bit unkind. I have on occasion bid on things without fully reading the full description - nothing major missed luckily. Although better not to bid it doesn't 1) stop you reporting it and 2) make you liable for an illegal charge.
Ebay do take notice when you report these! I know I've told them

It stands for Not A Regisered User. In other words, Ebay will suspend their trading account.
I must admit I don't really see why sellers shouldn't be entitled to charge a 'reasonable' extra amount to cover their Paypal fees, as long as they are clear about it in their auction....though I certainly don't agree with sellers slyly asking for extra after the auction closes, as seems to be the case here.
When sellers were allowed to charge, if people read the auction properly and they were happy to bid knowing they may pay extra to use Paypal, then that's their choice. Both buyer & seller were happy. I suppose it's all down to Ebay wanting as many people as possible to use Paypal, since they now own it (or vice versa...can't remember who runs who anymore).
Anyway, I bet all that's happens now is that most sellers just up their P&P charge slightly to cover the possibility that their buyer will use Paypal...with the result that even people paying by non-paypal methods now end up paying for paypal as well! And unrealistic P&P charges annoy me far more than someone clearly stating that they charge a few pence extra for Paypal.0 -

it seems that they just do it as they feel like it, for instance we have been wanting to purchase a bouncy castle and the particular one I wanted looked pretty good but slapped with a 3.5% charge for paypal, with the bidding up at around £600 before the item was done with that's quite a significant charge. I didn't want to bid until this was removed but also didn't want to email the seller aand risk being blocked or annoying him, so my brother in law and i both reported the listing 4 days ago...and still nowt!...probably because ebay know they're going to make loads from the FVF's!
i am a terrible cynic before 11am0
