A SAE won't stop the mail coming, but returning to sender will - all you do is cross out the address and write "return to sender not known at this address" and put it back in the box.
In my experience, it takes more than a year of doing this to stop the mail coming :-(

The flat above my old office is let out. We still get post for tenants who moved out 20 years ago.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Many years ago a neighbour came home to find the previous owner in his hallway.

"just called round to collect any post, I still have a key just in case" previous owner said jauntily.

Previous owner left rather hastily minus his key

    Oh my word!!

Mind you, some years ago a friend of ours, on moving into his new house, heard various creaking noises over a period of several nights. On investigating the attic (thinking he might have a rodent issue) he discovered the previous occupant hiding. Poor man had been sneaking down to the kitchen in the dead of night to look for food. There was a complicated (and rather sad) back story obviously.

Neither of these things actually happened but the stories are good.

On what basis do you say that? My neighbour was not a person who would make up a story like that. And you wouldn't have argued with him when he asked for the key.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

My example certainly did @teachfast . As I say, it was a rather sad story but it certainly gave our friend a tale to dine out on!

Both are reasonably well-known urban legends that occasionally appear in film (including recently on Netflix  no spoilers!)

I’m really surprised that people are being so unkind. The old chap should be let down gently. He may be rather lonely and sad about moving away. The OP is not social services, but many people here are urging him to behave in an appalling way, which is quite unnecessary to solve the OP’s problem.
For the sake of accuracy, the OP doesn’t mention the person’s age. The presumption it’s someone older and possibly slightly doolally has come from other people.
Either way, OP should be able to enjoy their home without the previous owner getting annoyed because they have the temerity to go out instead of waiting in to be a free delivery service.
He is a retired gentleman, correct. But still very lively and constantly doing manual labour for people he knows, so he isn’t an oap basically.

Oh and also, when he was clearing his things out of our garage whilst we were in the lounge, we heard talking and looked in the garage through the door (adjoined to the house) and he had invited someone he had ended up talking to on the street into our garage for a chat… it is our house now and he didn’t have permission to do that. It feels as if he is constantly crossing our boundaries.
