I’ve just checked my son’s provisional licence, the date of expiry clearly says Oct 2030 on the front - 10 years from date of issue in order to update the photo.

The expiry date on the back of the card is 2074 when he will be 70!

You need to make contact with the DVLA and ask them to send proof there is an issue with your son’s licence ASAP. Someone could have made a mistake and your son has passed after all!

I’m also surprised it’s taken 2 months to inform you irrespective of Covid as my elder son passed his test last October just before Lockdown 2.
The examiner took the provisional licence from my son and we received his full driving licence 2 days later.

That still doesn't mean the OP's son doesn't have a medical condition, which would mean they would need to renew their licence sooner than 10 years. I have a medical condition which means i have to renew mine every 5 years, although it used to be 3 years.

The thing is, under normal circumstances the exact situation the OP posted about can't have happened, there is nothing to "expire" in that time frame. There are of course scenario's like medical conditions or provisional entitlement for motorbikes where things can have expired however without more information from the OP as to exactly what the DVLA are claiming has expired we are merely guessing.
Given that some of the responses were a little robust to say the least, who knows whether the OP will return to give that information.

I am wondering if the OPs son actually presented an expired provisional motorcycle licence instead.

Maybe they applied for the wrong type - although I think (hope) their driving instructor should have checked/noticed

Anything is possible but how could someone confuse the 2.

Until the OP tells us the outcome we will not know.
