I agree, some posts on here have been unnecessarily harsh. Please make an effort to be pleasant, particularly to new posters.

we all make mistakes sometimes, there is no need to be patronising.

As others pointed out it isn’t cut and dry as provisionals should last 10 years. Has there been a renewal of the provisional with maybe a change of address that has resulted in it being given a shorter lifespan?

  • Has this happened to anyone before?? My son had 4 tests cancelled due to covid starting with August 2020, he finally had a rescheduled test on 30th April 2021 which he was over the moon to pass. The examiner took his provisional licence off him and after 2 months of waiting for his full licence to arrive we were horrified to receive a letter from DVLA advising him that his provisional licence had in fact run out on the 18th April and as such he would need to reapply for a provisional and resit his test. Why was this not picked up by the examiner and why has it taken Dvla 2 months to let us know. The next test date is now October and my son needs his car to get to his new job. Anyone any idea of what we can do?
Why would it be the examiner’s responsibility more than your son’s?

Anyway, he is where he is, he’ll need to reapply for his licence and re-take the test, and just be more careful in future.

I think some parts of this thread are a little unclear.
Provisional licences, like full licences, are valid until the day before the holders 70th birthday. They don't expire periodically like the photocard part of a driving licence does which is valid for 10 years however, contrary to popular belief, expiry of the photocard part does not invalidate your driving licence. You are still fully licenced to drive until either you reach 70 or DVLA send you written notice they are revoking your licence.

The theory test certificate expires after two years.

You said your son is 20 and had a licence for three years and his theory is valid until August this year.  There is literally nothing that can expire in those dates you've given.

What exactly are DVLA claiming has expired?

Would it be better for this thread to be moved to a more appropriate board?

OK, so tests were cancelled because of covid but it could have happened at any time.

Do they have a medical condition that was reported when they applied for the licence? If so then this will be the reason why it expired 3 years later. https://www.gov.uk/renew-medical-driving-licence

Does no licence invalidate insurance was my thought .

Does he have his own car or was he using the  driving instructor's car?

    Its another unknown
OP said >>>my son needs his car to get to his new job.

So another question how would he have got to the new job if he had failed the test and that is a 50/50 .

(Because the examiner is responsible for ensuring the learner is allowed to drive, perhaps?)

I’ve just checked my son’s provisional licence, the date of expiry clearly says Oct 2030 on the front - 10 years from date of issue in order to update the photo.

The expiry date on the back of the card is 2074 when he will be 70!

You need to make contact with the DVLA and ask them to send proof there is an issue with your son’s licence ASAP. Someone could have made a mistake and your son has passed after all!

I’m also surprised it’s taken 2 months to inform you irrespective of Covid as my elder son passed his test last October just before Lockdown 2.
The examiner took the provisional licence from my son and we received his full driving licence 2 days later.
