Estranged husband wont pay half bills yet insistent he pays half house insurance

Options
We have no mortgage, my husband left the home last October. He said he wouldnt pay half the bills so i took over them all but he is insistent on paying half the house contents and buildings iinsurance as his solicitor has advised him. Does anyone know why and if it would make any difference to his rights. He has said i can live in the home another year before we have to sell - the house is in both our names. Many thanks

The buildings insurance should be in joint names if the property is in joint names. Is that what he means? It doesn't really matter who actually pays it.
  • He is making sure the asset is secure as its in his name as well as yours.

Yes its in both names - i just dont understand why hes insistant on paying half when refused to pay household bills that were in his name so i had to take over them - do you know if it would make any difference to his rights if he didnt pay half of the house insurance as i dont know why his solicitor has advised this.

I didnt ask him to pay anything - it was he who said he would be paying half the bills as they were all in his name but then said he wouldnt so i was more than happy to put them in my name. I just wanted my question answering - not opinions or assumptions but i thank you for your answer.

No they would still be equal, as he has a share in the property he is making sure it is protected until you sell. I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding rights or who owns more based on him paying half the insurance.

If the house is carried off by a tornado he will want half/a share of the money so is benefiting from the insurance and needs to make sure he has a right to any pay out.  So no difference to his rights in normal circumstances.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

In which case, maybe you should just ask his solicitor then.
