My parent's laptop is on it's last legs, don't need anything fancy, no need for office packages etc, just basic internet use, as their laptop cannot support updates for browsers etc and is playing up. Any suggestions for a value for money option please with some future proof regards browsers etc please?

Have they ever used an iPad? That would seem to fit your brief pretty well.

That would be the perfect solution, however they don't have wi-fi.

Because? Home internet that has sufficient speed to surf the web usually has a router capable of broadcasting Wi-fi around most of a house. If not, an off the shelf Netgear router would provide it with the correct IP settings applied.

They have internet via cable into their laptop, they will not entertain having it as wi-fi.

    Interesting - any reason why?

A number of reasons, which I've tried to explain to my parents, but anyway. That's not for this thread.

So a Chromebook is out then, no Ethernet cable connection. I bought my last hp laptop refurbished from laptops direct.co.uk first one arrived damaged and had no problem getting them to replace it.

Not a problem, you have to buy an adapter but an iPad works fine via ethernet... that said think an iPad is overkill for their needs
