If you look at the Street View historic views, the extra lane at the Give Way has been added very recently, so maybe the confusion is from drivers who have got used to the old ways?

"Basic road manners" is what makes the traffic jams at approach to lane closures ten times as long as they need to be.
Sadly people do not understand filter in turn....

    Good spot.

I guess this means lane 1 of every motorway has also been added quite recently.

As above, if you use the left hand lane to turn right don't you need to merge back in at some point before going under the bridge, but no merge is marked?  It seems a case for setting a local councillor on to arranging better road marking to me.
I don't think this will be part of the Local Authority Highways network, but rather Highways England.

    The A41 isn't a HE-managed trunk route there.

Patently obvious it is single lane going round the roundabout (thingy) under the bridge.  There is no merge in turn and I'm not surprised folk are pithed off with you.
  • If you reverse up the slip road (not literally, as that’ll probably get you some points rather than just horns), the signs clearly show that it is a roundabout and so the normal roundabout rules should apply (so right lane only for going right). I agree that it is a stupid layout though…

Personally I would follow the herd, and use the right hand lane that the locals use, taking the left lane and cutting in is likely going to end in tears one day when the horn blowing becomes a shove.

Just take a look at the dash cam videos on youtube, there are loads where people seem convinced that they have "right of way" and actually plough into things, the only action they take being sounding their horn (some even seem to accelerate into the incident).
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I know that junction well as I used to use it but in the opposite direction every day.

It's a dual c/way but not onto a normal roundabout, there's no left-turn exit and it goes into a double width lane that runs under the A41 and onto Two Waters Way down to the lights. There is no logic to believing that the left lane on the off-slip is for use only by drivers who have left the A41 and are then rejoining it at the same junction.

Two Waters Way is also dual c/way, so you have 2 lanes into 2 lanes into 2 lanes. It makes absolute sense to use both lanes to head into Hemel; I'd put you as entirely correct as you've read a junction correctly that presumably most others have failed to read. Surely not all of them are new to this and seeing it for the first time.

Carry on doing what you're doing and ignore the idiots who hoot.

Did you look at the streetview link and follow it round? There are NO markings to indicate that there are two lanes ... in fact there are markings (after you pass the A41 exit and though under the bridge) which indicate that there should be a single lane (under the bridge).

I agree that the layout is sub-optimal, but I also understand that drivers in the RH lane could perceive the OP as a queue-jumper.
