Quote from jim1999 in closed thread:
"So from now on, referral links and codes will be getting spammed across the entirety of the forums and the forum team will be spending hours and hours playing whack-a-mole.
I suspect this isn't the true reason, at all, which is why you won't care - but I really doubt this will save time."
Jim, I guess the real reason is that mse is thinking about its reputation and doesn't want to be seen as helping people abuse account opening promotions? Goes for matched betting too.

I think its more due to its members getting money from the referrals and not MSE itself.
Wouldn't be surprised in you see more referral offers in the weekly emails as time goes by.0 -

Wouldn't be surprised in you see more referral offers in the weekly emails as time goes by.What you’re suggesting would be a direct contradiction of MSE’s Editorial Code and founding principles, namely that we put the consumer first and that our editorial stance remains independent from any commercial objectives. The decision to remove the Referrers board came down to the fact that it only comprised 0.36% of the Forum’s content yet required many hours of managing per week.
